Past a Scare

Hey Everyone. Smile

The holidays were eventful for us.  We had a scare with Ben right after Thanksgiving.  One night, I felt a small lump on his neck.  By the next night, it had grown to the size of a small egg in his tiny neck.  After a surgery at Duke and a month of antibiotics via a PIC line (gentamicin for a week and nafcillin for a month), he seems to have beat this one! Smile  It turned out to be a very bad staph infection.

He'll be five at the end of this month and is bright and happy, going to a preschool three days a week, playing soccer, living life to its absolute fullest.

I just got around to finding this new site and am catching up on everyone and stuff.  I hope everyone is well and smiling.

In Friendship,

Bensmom

Wow, you are fortunate to find that lump. It sure sounds like it came on fast. I assume no other symptoms? It's sure a hard thing to go through with a little one. I'm glad he's doing better.

It did come on soooo quickly, Karen.  He's never had one grow so quickly... it scared us!   At first it was hard and they just did the PIC line and antibiotics.  But the infection was so bad, it wasn't doing a thing.  That's when they opened it and continued to do heavy antibiotics.  He had a low grade fever when I noticed the lump, but nothing major and he seemed to feel good.  He had been restless at night for a couple of days prior though, and I guess I had the feeling something was coming on.  I think it's so important for us to trust our gut.

I'm so thankful for the amazing group of doctors at Duke... Dr. Joseph Roberts is our doctor and he has a group of Fellows that are so thorough and comforting.

Thanks for the good wishes.  Take care. Smile

Hi!

I live in NC and take my son, Joey to Chapel Hill. I was wondering if you could tell me what Duke has to offer  for CGD patients..any info would be helpful.

Thank goodness Ben is doing better.  The low grade or no/fluctuating fever is very scary.  I had my staph infection this past year for months and months before it got to the point of lumps. I had not been diagnosed with CGD yet and had no idea what was going on.  Dealing with this disease is constant education and monitoring.  It sounds like you are doing both very well.
