How Do I File for SS DisabilityHi. It's been a long time since I've posted but I have been having some problems in life (lost my job of 10 years and can't find another one with health insurance) and would appreciate any inpuit from any of you who have had to file for Social Security Disability benefits. I am looking to file for disabilty since I have not been in wonderful health for at least 5 years and can't find another job that can offer me medical insurance and I don't think I'll be able to find a job where they will be okay with me being gone as much as I tend to be either. I welcome any help or advice you may have. Ben

Thank you for your words of encouragement and for your advice on SS disability. i have been reading everything I can on the site you sent me and found that under section 14.07 on page 10 of 34 (printed out version) on immune system deficiency disorders it actually lists chronic granulomatous disease as a primary (congenital) reason for disability. That eases my mind a little bit. My employer (can't say name because of signing my severance package papers) has been really good to me in the past and has just been feeling the economic crunch pretty bad since they are in the construction business. They have been fairly generous on my severance too. They are even paying my full medical and dental COBRA premiums for 6 months. That helped put my mind at ease for a little while. I have had aspergillus pneumonia 2x, sinus infections and surgery 3x, crohn's disease which resulted in a colostomy, a hernia at my stoma that had to be fixed (laparoscopically at least), general fatigue, headaches and various smaller issues in the past 5-6 years. Because of all of this, I am going to try disability. My goal is to try to go back to school and get a 2 year degree in something where I could work from home on my bad days and get back to work again. I am sorry to hear about your husband's job loss. I hope he'll be able to find another job soon. I've actually had one interview from the two resumes I've sent out in the last two weeks but it turned out to not be a healthy place to work if you have CGD (no insurance/musty old building). My state has a Minnesota Workforce website that has all kinds of job postings (government and private) that are way better than the stuff on Monster.com. You should have your husband see if your state has a site like this. Thanks again for your help. Ben Hi Ben My son has been trying to get ssi I was wondering if you were able to get on it he hasnt been able to work do to a brain infection and has already been denied once, i did an appeal for him also he is on 21 now and hasnt worked enought to get ssdi I how your doing well Kim Ziola

Hi, I’m very sorry that you lost your job. It’s happening a lot due to the economy. My husband, Alan, will be unemployed this coming Wednesday. It’ll be difficult to find work. In time things will get better. If you haven’t gone to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) you might want to use them as a back up for your health issues. Not having good health for 5 years is not very good. Whatever you do you want to have the best specialists that know about CGD and how to treat it so you can get on the track to good health again.Regarding Social Security Disability benefits – Here is a link for adults, ages 18 and over, and how to apply for disability benefits: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/applyfordisability/adult.htm If you are not successful getting it the first time, here is a link to the Appeals process: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10041.html
Sometimes it is better to hire a lawyer that specializes in Social Security Disability benefits.
Look in your phone directory under “Attorneys – Social Security & Disability Claims” There are two types of lawyers that may help:
(1) One that works on contingency meaning he charges no fees unless your case is won.
(2) Pro-bono lawyers work without compensation. He should have expertise in SSI.
In both types of lawyers, if your case is won, they can often collect back payment from the time you first applied for SSI. This can amount to thousands of dollars.
A letter from your doctor is always helpful. This can include:
(1) Brief explanation describing the form (X-linked, etc.) of CGD you have and the complications it can cause
(2) Section 14.07 of the Social Security’s regulations and how this applies to CGD: “deficiencies of cell-mediated immunity…associated with documented, recurrent severe infection occurring 3 or more times within a 5-month period.” It can be documented that most CGD patients have a severe life-threatening infection every few years.
(3) Limitations of activities for CGD patients due to scarring of lungs from previous infections and/or chronic gastrointestinal problems, such as vomiting or diarrhea that interfere with work or school. There are also restrictions in areas that could cause infection, such as being in areas where there is dust or mold.
(4) The need for prophylactic medicines, such as Bactrim, itraconazole, prednisone, and interferon gamma. Interferon gamma has been shown to reduce infections by 72%.
If you are able to work, sometimes a government job is good. We met a man at NIH who had a brain tumor and he worked at JPL/NASA here in California. They were very supportive of his many trips to NIH.
Please give an update on your health. We care.
