Gamma-Interferon experiences asked

Grégor's picture

Hy to the Gamma-Interferon users,

Who can tell me about the determined side-effects for the use of Gamma-Interferon?

I participated during the trial years ago, and a couple of years after.
During to would-be side effects as hypertension/high blood-pressure and fatigue I stopped the use of Gamma-Interferon.

Now, I'm in a pre-dialysisfase, my MD wants to restart the use,
because every infection now increases the chance of renal damage, and makes dialysis come closer.

Because at the time I stopped they spoke of would-be side effects I now wonder;
are they really determined side-effects? and if so how do you manage these effects.

Like to hear your experiences.

Greetings,

Grégor

I was in the original study for interferon at the University of Minnesota back in 1988. I took it for a long time but didn't seem much good out of it ( I still became ill like normal). I stopped use in the late 90's. I always had to take Tylenol with it because it gave me a fever. Now I started taking Interferon a few yrs. back and take a smaller dose and don't have to take Tylenol anymore with it.

Gregor,

Sorry to hear about your kidney problems!  My son who is now almost 15 has taken gamma for about 5 years now.  He has minor side effects that may be from the gamma but with the other meds he takes its hard to determine if it is just the gamma or a combination of everything.  The side effects that he has is occasional fever the night of shot (but usually only when he forgets to take tylenol that night), minor headaches and insomnia.  All of these problems are very minor with him and since he has not even had as much as a cold since starting gamma I feel that it is well worth it.

Hope this helps and please let me know if I can answer any more questions.  Good luck!

Take care, Melissa

I have been on Actimmune for about 6-7 years. I have the fatigue and headaches. That's the only side effects that I have. Good luck with that.

Hi,

My son has been taking gamma interferon's pretty much since birth. He's five now.  His doctors stopped it for a year because he had severe Aspergillus pneumonia. They started it again  this past June. As far as I can tell, he hasn't experienced any side effects from it. From what I have read about it, the doctors don't really know exactly how gamma interferons work, but that they DO help reduce severe infections.

So are the kidney problems related to the medications? Is this something my son will have to deal with in the future?

Hy Julie,

Thanks for your reply.
My kidney problems are due to granuloma's in my blather during youth and puberty. They caused a regular impulse of urine backwards to the kidneys. So that problem isn't caused by medicatios.

All the best,

So will you definately have to go through dialysis in the future then?

Have you had problems with skin infections or mostly inside organ stuff?(Sorry, I don't really know how else to word it...)

Yes Julie, my future will probably be dialysis or renal transplant. There were only just 3 CGD-renal transplants in the USA. Overhere in Europe there are no experiences with it.

Both the problems you mentioned I suffered from:
as well skin infections and internal organ problems:
blatter, lungs, liver etc. Also twice I had a CVA (braininfarct).
Medics are not sure how and if they are related to CGD.

greetings and all the best,
Grégor
