Bone loss

Have any of you older CGD'ers who have bone loss been put on any medication? I was put on Boniva. I was wondering if anyone has had any positive results from meds? It is an additional $55 a month and I was wondering if it was worth it. I do have bone loss and bone loss in my teeth.

I hope everyone is having a healthy new year!

Hi Karen,

Erik (age 30) has bone loss, especially in his teeth. In 2005 he was given a Zometa infusion for his bones. He was told that he only needs to do this once per year. I have read that Zometa, Fosamax can possibly cause, in rare cases, osteonecrosis of the jaw. This is where the bone tissue in the jaw area fails to heal. I don't know if this is true for Boniva. You might ask your doctor about Zometa. I'm not sure what the cost is. Glad you posted. Hope you're doing well. Mary Hurley

I have read on the internet that Zometa is used in cancer patients. How did they determine that it would work for CGD?? I am interested in something that you only have to do once a year. Did Erik have to go to the hospital and have it administered by IV? I have an appointment next Thurs so I am asking about it. Thanks for the feed back. I am doing well, this week anyway!

Thanks,

Karen

Hi Karen,

I believe Zometa is used in cancer patients, but they are given a much larger dose or perhaps it's more often. Erik had this done at NIH and had it by IV. Please let us all know what your doctor advised. Glad you're feeling well.
