Need help - skin infectionsHello -- I'm needing some help from anyone/everyone. My son Nathan (20) has developed some unusual skin infections, he's prone to acne & breakouts but what has developed is a really strange scalp infection that started rather quietly & has progressed to the point that his entire scalp is covered with lesions all in progressive stages of healing & recurring, he has lost none of his hair. A Dermatologist put him on Accutane which helped the skin on his face & back, but did nothing for his scalp, it has tested positive for staph...but the doc hasn't addressed it. Our family physician suggested a Dermatologist in Kansas City, MO... and our insurance now doesn't cover the Infectious Disease group that has always followed him in St. Louis, MO at the Children's Hospital. This may seem odd, but I don't know what to do for him, what Doctor to take him to and I'm beginning to feel desperate. He's miserable, it's painful... he's now developed some skin lesions on his legs such as an ingrown hair and in the groin. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you so much in advance...I look forward to hearing something. Beverly Robinson

Beverly, I am so sorry to hear Nathan is having such a tough time. Sounds to me like he may need some strong antibiotics to kill whatever bacteria it is that is causing these skin lesions. Whenever my kids get staph lesions on their skin, we use Bactroban on them and they clear up pretty quick, but none of my kids have had the problem as severely as what you are describing. Sounds painful! Has the doctor recommended a round of IV antibiotics? Has Nathan had a recent blood work up to rule out an internal infection? If not, I would insist on it. And have his sed rate checked. I sure hope they can find a way to treat this problem quickly. Please keep us posted Hugs Janet |

Beverly,
I wish I had good advice to give. I agree that it sounds like he is in need of some heavy duty antibiotics to fight this. Obviously, the rash and lesions are coming from the Staph. Update us and let us know what's going on. I have great doctors at Duke here in North Carolina. I know that financially that's not an option but perhaps they would give some free phone advice!
Prayers for Nathan,
Connie
One day at a time.... and smile. :)
