Going to the beach![]() Hello! I am new to the community, and to learning the do's and don't of CGD. I have a 4yr. old son, Trevin, who was diagnosed this past August. We live in Wisconsin and are going to Ft. Lauderdale on vacation in May. I was wondering if anyone can tell me any do's and don't I need to be aware of while we are there? Is it safe for him to go in the ocean. How about playing in the sand? Any suggestions on how to make this go smoothly are welcome. Thanks, Brandy

![]() Hi, I live in Florida so I have been going to the beach all my life. (I am in my 50's). When I was recently diagnosed with CGD I asked about swimming. I was told no lakes, rivers or the beach. Only swimming pools due to chlorination. I was stunned especially since I was just snorking in Belize in October. The doctor told me the danger; especially here in Florida is the red tide bacteria. I would suggest you check the local water conditions carefully before you let Trevin swim. The sand is OK. Vickie
![]() Hello! Just wondering if certian beaches are better than others? Is "red tide bacteria" everywhere? We are going to Ft. Lauderdale. My sons Dr. says if the ocean is clear it should be okay, but if it is cloudy or dirty looking, don't go in. He grew up in FL, but I'm wondering why his opinion is differing from your Dr.'s. Maybe your Dr. knows something mine doesn't. Thanks, Brandy ![]() The ocean is fine; it's better for him than lakes are because the salt kills bacteria. I've never heard anything about avoiding sand. What part of WI are you from? I live in the Twin Cities. |

Our rule is no fresh water lakes, ponds, and/or streams. The ocean is OK and pools are OK (but no hotel jacuzzis). Bathe in fresh water after we're done. We visit the beach (CA and HI) about 2x each year and we have a salt water pool at home that sees frequent use.
We've had no issues except sensitivity to the sun from some of the meds. Check your meds - some antibiotics and antifungals can make you very sensitive to the sun (one caused Elise to burn in minutes when exposed to the sun). Hats and water resistent sunblock are a must.
