Mesalamine anyone?

Elise has been having some mucus and a small amount of blood periodically in her stools. The gastroenterologist has recommended a 30 day trial with mesalamine (brand name Asacol, Canasa, and Pentasa). Has anyone tried this med? If so, how did it work out for you?

Hi,

Stephen started taking mesalamine delayed release 400 mg tablets yesterday. He is supposed to take two tablets by mouth twice daily. He's an adult so the amount would be different for Elise.

He also started taking Konsyl (orange flavored) 3.4 gram pyllium hydrophilic mucilloid – take one packet (mixed in 8 ounces of juice or water) by mouth once daily – for constipation.

I have heard that other CGD patients have taken mesalamine, but I don’t know the results. Stephen had an endoscopy and colonoscopy this past June at NIH. It showed some inflammation. He’s also has had a pilonidal “sinus” for many years. He has tried many treatments for this, but nothing works.

I have read that granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has helped some CGD patients. In one case the mesalamine did not help the patient, but the GM-CSF did. I’d be glad to send you the abstract.

I think the mesalamine is worth trying and Stephen or I will let you know if it helps.

I hope it helps Elise.
